Death In Japanese Detention Center Sparks Hunger Strike

The death of an Indian immigrant held a Japanese detention center triggered a hunger strike at the facility. On Friday night, a man was found hanged in a shower at the centre in Ibaraki. (EE-BA-RA-KEE) According to reports, he was depressed about how long the authorities were taking to decide his immigration status. Officials did not comment on the number of detainees on hunger strike or their nationalities, but Kyodo News says there are over 40 protesting. Japan notoriously restrictive immigration laws and rarely accepts asylum seekers. This is the 14th death at a Japanese immigration detention center since 2006.
