A Guyanese sailor was crushed to death early Easter Sunday morning while loading a ship at the Trinidad Cement Ltd port in Claxton Bay, Trinidad.
According to the Trinidad Guardian, Doodnauth Nateram, 44, of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara died at the San Fernando General Hospital at around 3.40 am from internal injuries. Nateram, who was employed with the ANS Shipping Company, had been assisting the crew in loading a shipment of cement on to vessel when he was fatally injured.
Police reports indicate that around 2:40 am, excavator operator Ravi Mahadeo Persad, was loading cement while Nateram stood along a railing aboard the ship. While Persaud was turning the excavator, he accidentally pinned Nateram to the railing with the machine.
Nateram was taken to the hospital by a TCL ambulance, where he died. His body was taken to the hospital mortuary where an autopsy is expected to be done Tuesday.
Thus far police classify Nateram’s death as an accident. An investigation is ongoing
TCL said they were investigating the incident as well.
