Indigenous Affairs Ministry Donates Sports Gears To Moraikobai Village

Youths of Moraikobai, in the Mahaica-Berbice region, are being encouraged to become more involved in sporting disciplines, as Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs handed sports gears to the village on May 18.

The equipment, which included footballs, volleyballs and nets and tennis rackets were handed over to Deputy Toshao, Mary Joseph, during a ministerial outreach led by Minister Sydney Allicock.

According to Minister Allicock, the donation is part of the ministry’s plan to boost sports development in Hinterland Communities.

Over the past two years, the ministry along with the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport has been working to ensure talented Indigenous youths are afforded the opportunity to participate in sporting events both nationally and internationally.

In 2015 the government allocated $2.5M to the Ministry of Indigenous People’s Affairs, to procure sports gears for youths in communities in Regions One, Eight and Nine.
