PART OF THE NEWLY CONSTRUCTED CJIA OFFICIALLY OPENED

On Saturday the arrival and departure terminal at the southern end of the CJIA, was officially opened.
It was a low key, no fanfare almost uneventful occasion. The airport expansion has cost the Guyanese taxpayers US$150M.
At Saturday’s opening, there was no cutting of the ribbon, no star-studded guided tours, and no officially prepared government speeches.
The Timehri expansion, is one of Guyana’s largest debt-financed ventures, with the Chinese providing the loan, then using their personnel and technologies to construct the work.
The project was rooted in controversy from its inception, with the APNU/AFC complain about the cost while they were in opposition. When the government changed, the PPP said that the project was badly handled by the Coalition government. The project was eventually reduced in size, even though the cost remained the same.
Those arriving and leaving on Saturday were treated to local fruit juices and snacks, compliments of the airport management.
They were also some branded products that were distributed for free.
Works continue at the airport and are expected to be completed by this years’ end.
