Safer workplaces for Linden

The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department of the Ministry of Social Protection hosted a two-day workshop in Linden aimed at seeing a major reduction in work-related accidents.

Over 28 employees representing OSH committees from the Linden Mayor and Town Council (LMTC), the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC) and the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) took part in the joint workplace safety and health committee training held at the LMTC conference room.

After the two days, the participants had garnered vital knowledge of their role in providing a safe OSH environment for all employees of their respective organisations. On Thursday, introductory remarks were presented by senior officers of the various workplaces that participated in the exercise. They expressed confidence that the participants would return with the necessary know-how to create a safer OSH environment.

Some of what was presented over the two days included an introduction to Occupational Safety and Health, OSH risk management, workplace inspection, accident inspection and prevention and OSH policy.

Presenter and Senior OSH Officer Roydon Croal noted that the training was indeed necessary since checks at the various organisations revealed that the committees were dysfunctional and there was a need for training since there were many new members of staff. Croal said that prior to the training, many of the participants had no knowledge of OSH and their role in ensuring that their rights were met in this regard. At the end of the workshop, they were able to conduct a workplace inspection and prepare a place to control or eliminate hazards in their own workplaces.

Croal noted that more training will be facilitated by the ministry as requested by employers or as the ministry sees it fit.
