Thousands gathered in cities across Brazilian on Saturday to mark one month since the killing of Rio de Janeiro city councilwoman Marielle Franco.
Franco was struck four times in the head at close range in central Rio de Janeiro during a driveby shooting. Born in the Mare (MAH-RAY) favela, Franco, a black bisexual, feminist and human rights activist, was an outspoken critic of police brutality in Rio’s poor communities. Her murder remains unsolved.
